THE FRIENDS OF THE WOLFTONE

Meetings and Events

Things we are interested in:

- The exploitation of fear

- The things we are not supposed to hear

- If numbers can howl

- Musical animality

- All kinds of vibrations

- The taboos of Western music

THE FRIENDS OF THE WOLFTONE is an association of artists and musicians dedicated to the phenomenon known as "the Wolftone".

In Western music, the “wolftone" is an acoustic parasite resulting from sound interferences emitted by certain string instruments. The designation itself refers to the "wolf fifth”, an interval whose mathematical ratio was cut off in order to fit in the "circle of fifths", a representation of the tuning system on which all Western music is based. Considered particularly dissonant, the “wolf fifth”, has been either banned or systematically avoided in musical practice until today.

THE FRIENDS OF THE WOLFTONE draws on this phenomenon to explore our relationship to systems and numbers, and how the figure of the wolf has been used to embody the forbidden, the unfit or the noise. It aims to generate various activities and encounters through different meetings, concerts and artistic endeavours.

The association was created as part of Augustin Maurs’ Wolftone project for the Wallis Sound Biennale 2023.
